In the news: PCSG supports free access to smart chatbot

This initiative is launched in the UK on a non-profit basis with the support of the Primary Care Society for Gastroenterology (PCSG).

Covid-19 forced the most vulnerable in our society to go into self-isolation, such as the 600.000 people living in the UK with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) of which Crohn’s and Colitis are most common.

To help manage their disease more effectively during the crisis, the digital coach from Nori Health is made available for free from their website (use access code UKFREE) with the support of the Primary Care Society for Gastroenterology and its Chair, Dr Kevin Barrett.

Nori Health is an 8-week supportive program with a conversational (chatbot) coach for people living with Crohn’s or Colitis. This is done through daily chat conversations with Nori across 100+ evidence-based topics proven to impact quality of life.

Having suffered from Crohn’s Disease for over 15 years my involvement in healthtech is personal. The lack of support services I encountered as I battled with a diagnosis of chronic bowel disease was the impetus for Nori Health.

Along with my co-founders (all of whom have experience of either living with or treating chronic illnesses) we knew that sufferers need psychological support to manage their lives, which is sorely lacking. Crohn’s & Colitis UK and IBD UK recently recognised the increasing shift to self-management for bowel disease sufferers and that personalised support is just not possible otherwise.

In the news: using Crohn’s Disease diagnosis to help people with IBD and IBS (Evening Standard)

Roeland Pater was in his late teens when he was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease, a form of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). He ignored it for as long as he could until he was finally hospitalised a few days before a holiday.

“All of a sudden, I was in the hospital and had people telling me I now had a chronic disease. That was very surreal,” he tells the Standard. “After a few years of trying to ignore it, I realised that everything in my life had changed. So I became aware that it was better to start dealing with it in a more healthy way.”

In the news: Nori Health starts patient trial with its chronic illness chatbot

A group of over 150 patients including Americans suffering from chronic illness entered a 6-week program with a chatbot to help them feel better. Patients chat with Nori to discover lifestyle patterns that make disease symptoms worse.

“This virtual trial is focused on inflammatory bowel diseases like Crohn’s Disease and ulcerative colitis”, founder and CEO Roeland Pater comments. “It also includes people living with irritable bowel syndrome, which millions of people are dealing with everyday. The first recorded outcomes are very promising.”

It’s difficult. I can truly enjoy technology. For as long as I can remember I have been passionate about tech, gadgets, phones, etc… But I’m very aware that it has a negative impact as well. For me it’s a two-sided issue; stress and limited enjoyment. The stress-factor because there is never true rest.

When we have a minute to do nothing, we take out our phones and again our brains start processing all kinds of stuff. This impacts my body and possible symptoms. When building Nori, we are actively making people aware of this issue as well. Trying to get them to learn again how to truly relax without any screens.

Almost like clockwork. There is the bi-yearly (serious) flare up again. Moving from the cold weather into the warmer and the other way around, my Crohn’s Disease symptoms are heating up. I can feel the inflammation and I’m currently under strict watch. So what is this thing with seasonal changes anyway?

Literally speaking, the cause of seasonal changes in weather is directly tied to the angle of the sun and latitude, as well as to the astronomical phenomenon of the Earth’s orbit around the sun. So how does this affect our bodies? Well, we simply behave differently throughout the year. Both our body and our mind is affected.
